HISTORY HIGHLIGHTS
1930's 1932 A group of mothers brought their pre-school children to play in a well-equipped yard of a Great Neck resident. Its members formed the nucleus for a cooperative school.

1933 The School at 42 Arrandale Avenue consisted of a director, 2 head teachers, 1 assistant and 30 children.

1935 GNCS moved to the house of a parent.

1936 GNCS moved to Great Neck Health League at 62 Arrandale Avenue. School’s scholarship program began.

1937 Mrs. Roswell Eldridge, an influential member of the community and board member of the League, arranged for the school to move to quarters at 614 Middle Neck Road.

1940's 1943 Due to the need for additional space, a move was made to a spacious house at 179 Middle Neck Road.

1944 Board ruled that Director be employed on a full-time basis.

1945 School operated on a basis of 5 mornings and 3 afternoons for all except the youngest group.

1948 School moved to its present quarters at 225 Schenck Avenue.

1950's 1957 School received a building improvement loan for use in renovating the interior.

1959 Renovation of the interior completed. 100 children enrolled in the school.

1970's 1975 A group of dedicated parents, in the role of fundraisers, launched a major campaign.
1980's 1980 Playground updated and officially named the Hy Sotnick Memorial Playground.

1981 140 children were enrolled.

1990's 1995 New logo, brochure, special theme weeks introduced. Bookfair began.

1996
Playground totally renovated with new equipment.

1997
Fall Festival and Healthfair introduced.

1999
25th Anniversary of Mayfair. New large “boat” placed in the playground.
2000's 2000 Parent Social and Yearbook introduced.

2002
70 years of excellence. Library renovated. New Enrichment Program, Extended Days program added.

2004
Newly-renovated Music/Movement Room. 30th Anniversary of Mayfair.

2005 Completely renovated all floors in the building. New carpeting and tiles.

2006 New equipment for lower playground donated by the Farkas family. Creation of “Two’s Clues” program for 2 year olds.

2007 75th Anniversary. Expanded Two’s Clues Program. Creation of Wall of Commemorative Tiles.

2008 Creation of Cultural Enrichment Fund to bring more experiences into the school. New activities added to afterschool program. Innovative Staff Development Meetings. New children's bathroom on main level. Kindermusik introduced.
